Smart Living - The Way Forward for Disabled and Older People

Smart living involves buildings that are tailored to the needs of the individual as well as related services such as telecare and local transport information.

This seminar brought together engineers, architects, builders, communication experts, health care specialists, energy providers and organisations representing disabled and older people to develop a holistic approach to future housing needs for people with disablities.

Universal Services

9 September 2009

  • This seminar aimed to establish which aspects of universal service should form the essential basis of a revised Directive suited to an age of broadband digital communication. The outcome of the Seminar proved useful in informing the UK’s negotiators in this area.

Designs on the Games

October 2008

  • This seminar highlighted what should be considered from an accessibility viewpoint when designing new technological systems to be used by visitors to major events. The target audience were specifiers and designers of new systems as well as disabled consumers and organisations concerned with accessibility.

Location-based services for people with disabilities

May 2006

  • The seminar will explored the role of location-based services helping people with disabilities, and heard from a number of projects active in this area.

Accessible biometrics

May 2005

  • Using a biometric in a specific service will help some disabled people, while others may be disadvantaged. Drawing upon the limited experience in the field, this conference brought together technology suppliers, designers of systems, operators, researchers, standards bodies and people with disabilities to propose realistic solutions. The programme covered an overview of biometric technologies, an assessment of the market opportunities (and in particular those in the financial sector), usability issues, testing, the role of standards, use by elderly, etc.

Broadband for all?

November 2004

  • This seminar focussed on the immediate realities rather than the distant possibilities for the elderly and disabled to access and make full use of broadband.

  • This seminar considered how hard of hearing people, who form one of the largest groups of people with disabilities, are able to use, or not use in many cases, modern telephone systems.

Guidelines for the accessibility of ICT systems

November 2002

  • This seminar explored ways in which to persuade manufacturers of ICT products to implement the principles of inclusive design.
