For many people some form of audible confirmation that a key has been pressed is very helpful. This will normally take the form of a sound in the telephone earpiece when a key is activated.
Audible feedback is particulary helpful to blind and visually impaired people, but also helps people with poor manual dexterity who may not be sure if they successfully activated a keystroke.
