PhoneAbility is an expert body spanning all areas of disability, making it a unique organisation that is both educator and influencer.

Its mission is to promote accessibility of ICT for older and disabled people by identifying existing shortcomings in usability and working with stakeholders to influence future developments.

Recent technological developments have blurred the boundaries between telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology.  To accommodate this, PhoneAbility goes beyond traditional telecommunications into ICT and broadcasting.

With a steering group made up of experienced practitioners, and access to an international body of informed opinion and expertise, PhoneAbility is an important source of awareness, information and knowledge that is uniquely placed to keep you involved in and abreast of developing technology and legislation in the field of assistive technologies, telecommunications and teleinformatics for older and disabled people as it happens.

Key activities include:

  • liaising with stakeholders to identify their needs in terms of developing and implementing accessible ICT products and services
  • raising trust and confidence as to how ICT can benefit the whole community, not just people with disabilities
  • organising regular Seminars, Workshops and Discussion Groups on topics of interest to stakeholders
  • scrutiny of EU and UK legislative and regulatory proposals that affect stakeholder business; providing commentary on draft legislation and coordination of submissions as part of the consultative process
  • collaborating with EU research projects in this field and stimulating businesses, research institutions and individual experts to become involved
  • providing access to its website, Newsletter and key publications that raise awareness of the issues for disabled people associated with new/developing technologies
